In the mid-19th century, the Imperial Porcelain Factory began producing large ornamental vases for the imperial residences. They were
decorated with copies of famous Old Masters painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Correggio, Murillo and others – mostly from
the Hermitage collection. The copies were striking for fineness and accuracy with colors, purity and lustre of porcelain paintings closely
matching the originals. The factory’s leading role in reproducing paintings on porcelain was acknowledged by multiple awards won at
World Fairs in London, Paris and Vienna.
